Nicola Ratti’s music is based upon the search for a personal language that is capable of joining together basic song structure, electro-acoustic experimentation, and the use of sounds extracted from the environment in which we live with a sensibility that ranges from improvisation to the almost artisanal construction of sound. Voice and words compete to create a result full of nuance and discovery within compositions open to both formal and emotional points of view.
Born in Milan in 1978, Nicola began his musical career playing guitar and singing lead vocals for the band Pin Pin Sugar, a math-rock group in which he played until their eventual break up in 2004.

The search for descriptive methods within a contemporary field through the use of sound, and the ability to “create environment” with sound and its identity as an territorial element are points where the activity of the musician and the architect converge. Nicola Ratti has had the opportunity to work on these themes within various exhibitions and events dealing with architectural and urban spaces.

VIVIMI
Triennale Milano 16/05/07 - 01/07/07The exhibit “ViviMI Citta di Citta” describes the change of Milan’s metropolitan area and that of its inhabitants by presenting images and settings of the near future. Through a path divided into four parts, that leads toward a theatrical space animated by film segments, sound and music, the exhibit presents an observation in and around the future of the “Citta di Citta”. This path brings the visitor to a more complete idea of the territory and will hopefully provide some solutions for the future of the city and its surrounding areas.
The work consisted in a collection of specific ambient sounds capable of describing the present metropolitan area of Milan and in the composition of music and sound for videos representing the dynamics and time flow of the territory in question. Video by Toboga Srl

The Politecnico of Milan, Cantiere Isola and MTA associated have organised a week of meetings and exhibits dedicated to the memory of the architect Giancarlo De Carlo. For the occasion, NR has composed pieces set to fragments of urban descriptions by the architect himself. The music was performed by NR during the reading of these descriptions by Andrea De Carlo at the Casa della Cultura, Milan, on October 12th, 2007.

Bellows
Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti explore the limits of electroacoustic music through a very heterogeneous modality, moving freely between improvisation and composition. Bellows, released on the Swedish label Kning Disk marks the beginning of an effective collaboration where Ielasi and Ratti confront and confute their compositional habits and their musical language.Ronin
Ronin plays moving songs and sountracks for imaginary (or real) movies. It is a Bruno Dorella's project (OvO, Bachi da Pietra) founded in 1998.
